Meltdowns in Children and Adolescents with Autism: Practical Strategies for Prevention, Intervention & Post-Vention

Do you work with children and adolescents with autism who exhibit behaviors that interfere with their ability to effectively and efficiently navigate their environment? They appear willful, obnoxious, over reactive and unfeeling. They lose control of their ability to cope or regulate their behavior, which can send them spiraling into a meltdown. You are both left feeling frustrated, powerless, and helpless after each meltdown.

Drawing on over 40 years of professional experience, Kathy will lead you through dynamic discussion, video case examples and demonstrations providing dozens of strategies you can implement immediately with these children/adolescents-in any setting. Walk away with an array of practical strategies for:

• Preventing and de-escalating meltdowns
• Teaching and promoting appropriate behaviors
• Providing instructional consequences/replacement behaviors
• Developing self-control and self-management skills……..and more!

“Teach them the way they learn” will be the mantra throughout the seminar.

Today will cover the functions of a meltdown, strategies for the meltdown cycle: intervention, prevention and post-vention: including: executive function, self-regulation, social/emotional communication, and explosive behaviors. As well as techniques for after the meltdown and hands on and small group activities.

This is a practical strategies seminar! During this full day training you will learn dozens of functional, ready-to-use strategies for teaching students how to develop skills for self-regulation. General education teachers (as well as special education teachers and support staff) will find the information presented invaluable. Strategies presented will allow regular education teachers to utilize approaches within their own classroom.

Come and learn practical strategies that will empower your student to succeed, while capitalizing on his/her strengths.

Are You In the Zone? Social Communication, Enhancing Social Skills, & Academics for Students with Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, ADHD, PDD-nos & More!

Ask any educator, having a student with High Functioning Autism/Asperger Syndrome in the classroom can present numerous challenges. This training will teach participants how to reframe their thinking in addressing students with High Functioning Autism/Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS).

The first part of this conference will focus on social skills and the importance of social pragmatic communication for the student with autism. Individuals with this diagnosis possess inadequate social skills. Their ability to effectively engage and communicate is hampered by deficits that standardized tools often fail to target and many professionals have struggled to teach. This session will help participants to identify, develop goals, and learn to utilize interventions for those deficits related to social-interaction, social-communication, and social-emotional regulation, thereby allowing for more appropriate service delivery to those affected by High Functioning Autism, Asperger’s PDD-nos, and autism.

The second part of this conference will focus on high functioning autism and academics. Participants will learn a variety of behavioral supports designed to enhance the student’s ability to initiate work assignments, increase motivation, decrease distraction, compensate for gross and fine motor deficits, adapt the curriculum, modify academics, and increase cognitive processing. By employing these techniques educators will learn how to defuse power struggles in the academic environment and implement procedures that will benefit all.

Extensive recommendations designed for specialists and classroom teachers to help students succeed in the academic environment will be provided. Participants will take home numerous useful tools and creative ideas to use the very next day!
